Default Cleaning engine compartment

Guys, I got a dirty eng comp that I really need to clean. The main reason is that I got a few leaks and with all the dirty grime I can't pinpoint where there coming from. Any tips, products, what should I cover up and with what(pl bags). Thanks

I have a 1988 240 Wagon A/T

I tend to use brake-kleen to spot clean prior to looking for leaks, and a can of Gunk followed by a good blasting with a garden hose for a full clean (but I usually try and avoid this). If I have to go the Gunk route, I wait for a dry sunny day so I can leave the engine compartment open in the sun for a few hours to dry everything out. As long as all the hoses are connected, the air filter box is properly secured, etc, everything under the hood is water proof.

Except for that 25amp fuel injection fuse on the left hand side of the driver. Though I get that wet every time I wash mine and it never seems to corrode, I have heard a few people replace a bunch of stuff only to find out that thing was corroded. So mandobizar, you may want to keep an eye on that. Anyways, I use Greased Lightning and make sure to wipe it off with a wet rag (the stuff is not nice to paint). Dawn would probably work good too. I have also used a knife/scrapper to cut the thick stuff on the block.

ah. i should have said, I do make a point of avoiding putting the wiring, and just spraying it on the block.

Is the fuse and such exposed and in the same place on the 700's too?
