Cleaning my engine...good or bad?
I have been thinking about taking my car to a place to get the engine cleaned up. Like detailed I guess you could say. My only question is, does anyone know how the get it so clean? Do they blast it with water or chemicals that may be bad for the belts and hoses etc…? If anyone knows id appreciate it. Thanks.
How Much Are They Charging you for the service, for one?
cuz if you grab a bucket of water, some rags/papertowels, some brake part cleaner and some WD-40, you can do what they're going to do yourself...all they're going to do is use that same stuff to clean/wipe off the block, the housings and the hoses to make it look good...

If you really want a clean engine....then the only way is to do it yourself.
In the link below is the engine compartment of a my 92 244GL which I have about 50 hours invested in the cleaning of the engine compartment alone.
There are some tricks and shortcuts you can use, but I dont use them. The engine compartment is thoroughly is cleaned, then hand waxed. All other parts are hand cleaned. No sprays have been used like Endust, WD40 etc.
This car is going to its first show this weekend.

If you do it and you dont know how to clean it, you might put liquid into one of the cables and you is f$^$#, if you want to be sure you are not going to mess up your car, take it somewhere to have it professionally cleaned
Those items which can be removed from the engine compartment are removed and clean individually and the inside of the engine compartment is then clean and waxed by hand before putting them back. Make sure to clean the bolts and screws as well before putting it back together.
All hoses and wiring lines are clean by hand.
Most places you take it to have it cleaned will spray it down, not caring where the solvent or water goes.
I figured if I want it clean....do it myself and do it the right way.
