Cold Start becomes No Start

Cold Start becomes No Start
It's been taking a couple of cranks to get my '90 740 turbo running lately. When it first starts, it would idle up to about 1500 rpm, then drop down to below 800 and shudder really badly, so I tap on the gas. Sometimes when I shift to reverse, it would just die. Or if it doesn't die, it'd accelerate a bit and it would continue to shudder and hesitate a bit. And other times while I'm already down the road, I can feel it hesitate a bit as I'm accelerating.
A few days ago when the temp dropped to below freezing, it wouldn't start at all. I even got a block heater and strapped it onto my oil pan hoping it would make a difference. Today it wouldn'tstart at all.I almost got itto start, but it just coughed afor a second or two, then died.
I'm about to go out and pull the idle control valveto give it a good cleaning. Visual inspection of all the vacuumhoses seems okay. I'm also going to pull the line from the fuel rail to make sure it's flowing. I really doubt it'selectrical.
Part two ofthis postregardserror codes. My check engine light IS on, but my manual is inaccessible. Where do I place the pin on the diagnostics unit, how long do I hold down the button, and where can I find a list of codes?
Thanks!

Maybe also the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vaccum line from it and see if it has gas in it.
A2 and A6 if you have an A6.
Press the button once to get the codes. To clear them you need to hold it for 10 seconds then wait for the light to flash then hold it 10 seconds again and that shold clear them.
