Default Difficulty engaging PARK, 1994 945T

Hi, I have a 94 945T and when I first got it, I noticed that you have to push the shift lever all the way up to engage park, otherwise it would remain in reverse and roll back. It is steadily getting more difficult to engage park, it seems as though you can't push the shift lever up enough to engage Park. I am hoping it is just a worn or loose cable or something. Any ideas??
Oh, one more thing, there is some 'play' in the shifter lever, it will move about a half inch in either direction without changing any gears etc...

I found this online, (CLICK ON PDF file) looks like it is what I need to do, but not sure if I access this area from under the car, or if I remove the center console to do it... Any suggestions?
