Default Do lubricants age requiring replacement?

The 1988 240 we just bought only has 38,000 miles on it and runs fine. I am curious as to the need to replace the final drive fluid and tranny fluid. With so few miles is it necessary due to age?

While it may not be required, I certainly would just for peace of mind and knowing the fluid being used is in a healthy condition.

I would change automatic transmission fluid every 3-5 years regardless of mileage. differentials, maybe half as often.
