Default Exhaust on a 740 wagon

Hi, I am hoping that someone can tell me if there is a specific reason for the "S" shaped tailpipe on my '92 740 wagon. I am replacing my muffler and tailpipe soon and wondering if I can use a straight tailpipe instead. Thanks

Default Spark plugs

Hi, I am replacing my spark plugs soon and I am wondering if I can use Autolite double platinum plugs in my '92 740 2.3L. This was suggested to me at my local parts store. Thanks.

Moved to the 740 section.

You can replace the muffler with straight pipe but it's going to drone quite a bit and be a bit irritating inside the vehicle at highway speeds.

no, don't use any sort of platinum or iridium or whatall modern plugs, they won't work well with the late 1980s early 90s electronic ignition systems in these cars.

Use copper plugs, like Bosch Super+, or NGK standard, or Volvo OE.

NGK BPR6ES or Bosch SuperPlus WR7DC

a set of 4 Volvo brand plugs is $12 or so online...

re; S pipe..

(mine)

I believe its A) so you don't bang your shins on it when you're loading the car and stand too close, and B) so if you back into something, it has more give, a straight pipe would more likely damage the muffler.

If you go with copper plugs just remember to check and or replace them more often.

Actually, the higher voltage of the old style ignition system will likely burn out the platinum plugs, which have a very thin electrode, faster than the copper ones.

the standard plugs are good for 60000 miles if you're cheap (I'd probably replace them at 30000).
