Exhaust Pipe Knocking on Axle
Hi there,
I had the rear springs/shocks changed on my '82 244 a few months ago and since then I noticed when I go over large bumps, the exhaust pipe knocks loudly against something. I went under the car at a garage, bounced it around and it seems like it's hitting the axle (part where the pipe is tucked near the right rear axle). All the brackets seem to be OK and I checked with a garage who told me that if they put the pipe any lower it may scrape the ground. I am guessing this happened because the ride height is now a bit different (my old springs were saggy).
Any ideas on how to adjust/fix? I wonder if anyone else has had this odd issue.
Thanks!
Anthony

check your exhaust hangers first...they are rubber they tend to wear out and sag sometimes or even break...unlikely that a bad motor mount or trans mount will make your exhaust bounce...but I guess could happen
Hi Guys,
The exhaust hangers are fairly new and seem to hold well (though i did notice the muffler is a bit sagging to the right side - but that gives the pipe more room to bounce before knocking against the axle, so raising that I think would make it worse). If the engine/tranny mounts would be broken wouldn't they cause the pipe to be lower and give it again more room before hitting the axle? I do notice that my automatic gear shift shakes over bumps as well (I think it always has). It's an odd one this; I'll also have a mechanic buddy of mine have a look. Volvos... great cars but oddly engineered sometimes
