Hi guys, I'm going to change the oil for the first time and want to know what type of oil to use, i have a 1987 740 2.3L, i am confused because every website is suggesting different types of oil(mineral, semi synthetic or full) and i don't know what the previous owner used, so i really need your help to know what oil to use, is mineral a good choice?

 

Depends on how long you plan on keeping it.


I personally like the synthetic 15,000 mile oil, more time between changes.


Just use whatever the spec is, I believe 15w-40 (although I've run 10w-30). The B230 redblock engine is "nigh indestructible", so sleep easy.



The auto trans is less durable. Typically "only" good for 300k. Be sure to flush it or get it flushed every 50k miles.
