Default Front suspension - shocks and/or struts?

My 1990 740 GLE wagon front end bottoms out on potholes. Is it possible to put in only new shocks, or do I need to replace the strut springs and everything? Thanks!

Strut inserts should not help "bottoming out". Springs would. Are you sure you are not going into really big holes?

Thanks, it was a big pot hole. I will look into replacing the springs.

when you say "bottoming out" do you mean you hear a scraping sound? Is it when your backing out of a driveway and coming down the curb? It may be coming from the front or the rear. Unless you are carrying some extremely heavy stuff in your ride, I have never seen springs go out...get saggy yes...go out...no, unless 1 snapped...unlikely. You most likely have bad struts if hear the noise from the front...go push on the front of your car left side first...does it spring back, extra springy or feel froze? then do your right side. Do test on rear of car too. if they feel like they spring back they are fine, feel frozen or real mushy or springy somethings wrong...pinpoint it first may only need to replace 1 shock or 1 strut...

99% sure your springs are just fine. Probably just weak struts or bad strut tower bushings...
