Help
Hi to everyone,
I have recently purchased a 1979 245 manual wagon for my son as his first car, volvo, safe and reliable.
However, I'm having issues selecting reverse gear, I have found a thread on here but sadly it's for a 1987, and the gear stick is different, if someone has step by step instructions with diagrams on how to safely dismantle, repair and put back together information, I would be very much appreciative. It has something to do with the pull rod within the actual gear stick.
Pete.

Firstvolvo, it does sound like the reverse lockout system needs replacing. IPD may still sell a kit just for this not uncommon repair. I used it on mine when I first got my car, also. Not difficult to do. If you have been reaching a finger down inside the boot to engage reverse when needed, you should order a new boot too, because yours will be torn. The instructions for the kit are still online; google ipd 240 reverse lockout repair kit; but a printed copy will come with the kit.
it appears from VADIS (the parts catalog) that a 79 early 240 has a different stick shift assembly and lockout than the later 240's. not having ever driven or worked on any manual 240's, I've got nothing helpful to add to this.
