I am about to go off on my travels around the continent again in my 1998 volvo 940 manual 2.3 turbo... Last time my cat converter was stolen leaving me with pipework hanging and a big repair bill! They are apparently well sort after....This time i was thinking of having a straight through exhaust pipe fitted for whilst i am away. How will this affect the running of my car: Power changes, fuel economy, noise, engine running. Do i need to get it re tuned after changing the pipe work etc..... cheers james

 

You will get more power, better economy, put out more polution, not really much else would be different.

They are very valuable. I had to change out the one on my van. I could by new for $80.00 (non-OEM) and could sell it to the recycling shop for $120.00. DO the math, that's $40.00 profit on every cat. I bought??????????? The OEM was $320.00 BTW.

Running with out will increase power and MPG MAYBE. Your O2 sensor might be in the cat. (I'm new to Volvo's so I'm not suer), if that's the case your car may go to full rich on the mixture.

It's illeagle in ALL 50 states to run with out a cat. I'm not sure which content you're refering to. So if you do straight pipe it, a. you'll have to do it yourself, b/c shops shouldn't be doing it and b. you may need to add an air hole for the O2 sensor.

BTW I got $50.00 for just the "stuffing" out of my vans cat.
