HELP Oil Spray

There is oil coming from somewhere from the left side of the motor, when looking at the car straight on. I just replaced the air intake hose but I don't know why that would be of any interest. Help?!

left from the driver's perspective or from the mechanic's perspective

The front camshaft seal tends to ooze down and to the left leaking over the water pump seal in the LEFT FRONT. If the leak is further back, I'd suspect the Head Gasket. Take a mechanic's mirror and look in the places where the head meets the block. If there's oil there going down, there you are. I'd wash the motor first, then look for the fresh leaks. Many cars are so covered in oil, it's hard to tell...

UPDATE:

I took a look at the car in the daylight and there is oil dripping from places that it shouldn't drip from, I.E. the mud flaps (front and rear), from the middle of the car, middle-rear, and a huge puddle under the engine.

BearDog: Mechanic's left, driver's right.

tedv: I am definitely going to have to wash off all the oil on the engine.

Whoa, there! Mud flaps dripping oil? This sounds like a LOT of oil, more than an engine even holds. Do you live in the Gulf somewhere? Been driving on a Louisiana beach?Do you have ANY oil in the motor at all?

saberjk2 06-06-2010 07:38 PM

Tedv. I really wish I had been driving on an oily beach. At least I wouldn't have to directly deal with it. There is NO oil in the engine.

Pictures to come.

Not as bad as the gulf but I still think something broke...

Looks like the front cam seal... No big deal. You can do it yourself, may be... A couple of $ for the seal, valve cover gasket...

saberjk2 06-06-2010 09:11 PM

Should I replace any other seals around the engine if this one has broken too?

tedv 06-06-2010 09:37 PM

That one is by itself... so, there is not much labor saving.

if it's cam seal like ted says, that's an easy fix. Make sure you mark where the cam shaft pulley is at in it's rotation and don't turn the lower pulleys or you are going to have to reset the timing and that's gonna require a bunch of **** to come off. Including the dreaded crankshaft pulley.

The top seal pops out with a butter-knife and some perseverance. It should be obvious if that's the problem once your there.

saberjk2 06-07-2010 10:59 AM

From what I can tell, there is only one camshaft seal. So do you mean I should replace the front crankshaft seal? Because the crankshaft has a front and a rear seal.

Cherry_Pirate 06-07-2010 11:25 AM

you have pull off the cam pulley and there is a seal in the front behind it.

http://www.preludeonline.com/images/...ms/CamSeal.jpg this is, admittedly, not a volvo, but they look similar so I am using this pic. See that black ring around the camshaft? When you take the pulley off and pull back the plastic backing of the case you will see that... or a lot of oil... or if nothing, then that's your issue haha.

P.S. http://www.ipdusa.com/version.asp?st...ID=0&V_ID=2579 there's a rear cam seal, it has a cover over it so it might not be obvious.
