hi all pick quick ? overdrive relay
hi all
I just bought a nice 1984 volvo it is in pretty good shape and clean
from reading previous post the overdrive relay needs to be replaced. Current problem is the overdrive light comes on at times and then goes off. If I hit the overdrive switch it does nothing, unless the overdrive is working properly. How such I expect to pay for that relay can I get it at autozone or advance auto?
I believe that the relay is behind the center ac vents. How do I remove the center AC vents. Or what do I need to remove to get to the vents. I don't want too damage anything.
thanks

RE: hi all pick quick ? overdrive relay
If you live near a junkyard, bring your phillips head screw driver and find a few 240s. Take out the glove box and look down and to the left for a little (automatic orange, manual blue) 5 pin cube, that is the relay. Grab a few just to have on hand. Otherwise have you checked the wires in the shift lever for possible shorts? Take a small flat screwdriver and pop the little switch out of the top of the shifter. Make sure that the connectors on the switch are secure and clean. Look down the shaft for damaged wires. Test the switch by starting the car and pressing the button. You should be able to see the little up arrow on the dash light and not based on the switch. You can also bypass the switch by touching the two wires connected to the switch together. You might also look under the car at the wires running to the solenoid, as they often get damaged and short out. If all that checks out head over to NAPA and expect to pay $35 for a new relay. Grab a Haynes manual while you are there, because you are going to need it if you want to keep the Slovo going.

RE: hi all pick quick ? overdrive relay
I took the relay out shook it and heard a little noise inside. I put the relay back and the overdrive switch was working properly on and off each time like it was suppose to. I figure the relay is still faulty so I went to the junk yard a got one off a 1983 volvo and it works perfectly. I also grapped 3 extra but they were white off volvo a few years newer. Will the white ones work with my 1984 volvo.
thanks
