Default How to remove flame trap

Hello all. My Haynes manual doesnt show squat about the flame trap. From what I've been able to pick up on from these forums, is that it could be a cause of engine oil leaks. I have one leak from underneath which I thought could be the rear main seal, but now It's leaking from around the oil filler cap too. Anyone ever pulled the flame trap off? How hard? What needs to be cleaned or stops up on it? Many thanks in advance. By the way this is an 88 740 GLE non turbo.

Take a look at the Brickboard FAQ.

its easy enough, just need some thin hands and nimble fingers. I can do it and I have large hands. just go and replcae the oil filler cap and the valve seal afterward, or the cap grommet if you can buy one easily. they are probably both toast.

do you have to remove the intake manifold to complete the job?

I've done it both ways. The first time I removed the intake. The second time I knew pretty well what I was doing and had the throttle body off as well. It took a bit of jerking things around to move it past wiring harnesses and other things down there.

If the car has an EGR valve (California models), I don't know if it's possible to do the separator without removing the intake manifold--I couldn't do it. But I think this set up is only on the 940's.

Thumbs up

I have never done the job but I have had the head off on my 90 740 turbo wagon. If I were going to replace the PCV system I would remove the intake manifold. There is little room to work otherwise and I know that when I do a job for the first time I like to really be able to see what is going on. So, my vote is for remove. And if you did it that way you could do some other preventative work like replacing your vac lines.
