I need Help Badly.
Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have a 740 Gl Wagon in very good condition almost 257K on it and still running great! However, when I bought it the power antenna mast was broken so there is just a little piece of the old mast left. Stations still come in but get static from time to time. I noticed that there was a bolt on the end of the mast so i unscrewed it but the mast does not come off and i do not know how to take it off to install the new one. Can anyone help me. The motor still works i just have it disconnected because there is not enough mast to retract or extend the mast out so the motor just runs and runs so i have it disconnected to save the life of the motor. Can anyone help me replace this antenna!
I used an aftermarket "universal" solid mast antenna and replaced the motorized one. Open the trunk and behind the material, you will see the plug-in and mounting bolts for the antenna. If you want the motor antenna to work, you need a new mast and someone to install it.
you can buy a replacement mast with nylon strip from fcp groton. I think they are about $20
found one at ipdusa.com for $15

Installation however is trickier than advertized. I haven't done one yet where I didn't have to disasseble the whole power assembly and fish out some left over broken piece from the old mast but it is not that tough to do-it probably can use a good cleaning anyway after all those years.
If you still have some mast sticking out of the aerial nut, you can just grab it with a pair of pliers and yank the remains out. Refitting is simply a matter of feeding teh new nylon strap for teh antenna into the hole and pushing. The antenna mast will self level once you operate the motor, the motor has a torque limiting clutch on it, so the motor just powers on for x amount of time, fully seating the antenna mast.

This is the one thing I was able to fix on g/f's car -- check that, hte swapping out of wiper blades was the easiest I've ever done on any vehicle (nicely done, Volvo!)
It got a universal, rubberized replacement antenna ($6) and was able to use the hardware to attach to the stem that remained. Jerry-rigged but it worked, and she once again is cruising with NPR!
