I went to the local junkyard in search of something else when I noticed this quite new looking turbo in this wagon. I also found the old turbo (exactly the same) in the trunk. This made me think that the last owner must have just replaced the turbo. Something happened and the car ended up in the junkyard.
This is what’s on the turbo:
P.N.: 1389645
MFD number: 49178-0300
14970
Type T005-12B
Made in Japan.
My question is: Can I put this turbo on my 91 740 turbo wagonwhich has a Garret turbo on it without much problem. I remembered reading a post in the past few days (no idea where or who posted) someone did the swap and saying the Mitsubishi turbo is better. He said the Mitsubishi one has a metal clamp in the middle holding the turbine and the compressor together. This is just what I saw today. Could anyone tell me if this is a Mitsubishi turbo by the information above? If so, where can I find the information for the swapping job? If this is indeed a Mitsubishi and is interchangeable with mine, I’ll go get it before someone else figure it out. Thanks a lot.

You can do the swap but In myo opinion the Garrets are better than the Mitsu. turbos.
If it was a Garret turbo it would say Garret on the side of it.
If you get the one from the junk yard make sure you take all the cooler lines as well.

Thanks, Tech. I just can't help thinking about it. This is one of the few times you discovered a gem in a pile of rubble. Without a special trip to the yard, if noonegot itthe next time I'm there, it's mine. Erwin
