I'm about fed up
Okay. 86 Volvo, 740 GLE Estate.
Here is my problem, No overdrive. it's the automatic btw. I have 1-3 gears, shifts fine, No slips, or anything.
But no overdrive, I checked the fuse, not blown... Didn't know how to check the solenoid, or which one it even was, Because my chiltons book was wrong.
What else to check? Has anyone experienced the same problem as me?

You can check the OD relay. if not, then you can check the wiring.
then move to the overdrive solenoid.

Most definitely it would be your overdrive selenoid and if not that after cleaning or replacing then it would be the trans control computer. Additional, if it's an XC90 made in Tennessee then it will have a junk GM trans that should be replaced with the better foreign one. Yes I said better cuz GM doesn't love you anymore sadly.

josh, this is a 9 year old problem.
a 1987 740GLE doesn't have a transmission computer, its purely hydraulic, with a relay triggered solenoid on the side o fthe transmission that enables the 4th gear OD.
a 1987 740 has a made-in-Japan AW7x Aisin-Warner (Toyota) transmission, same one used in several generations of 4 cylinder RWD Toyota pickups.
