Install Of New Sound System
I just bought a 1989 240 and wanted to up grade the sound system and speakers. I am not sure how many speakers the car has? Will I be able to replace this system or should I go to some one like Best buy? I have so much other things that I need to ask but I have to start some where.

I looked for the speakers to day and only found three. Two in the front doors and one on the front dash. putting in speakers would be easy I'm talking about putting in the stereo. I don't know where to get the kits and adaptor plugs to put a new one in.
Thanks
Thanks

Wen I did mine in the 745T, They use the same color wires as stock did, which was nice. There is instruction that come with the unit, so you can just match the colors and solder them in or add connectors on the ends of the wires coming from the unit and plug them into the stock harness plug. I made my own.....
If you get the unit, and need help, just post up and we can walk you throught it....

The front door speakers will be tricky because the distance between the panel and the window is really skinny. That prevents you from using any kind of speaker with a bigger magnet assembly. To make matters worse, if you don't use the stock Volvo grill covers, the window crank can interfere. On my car, I actually split my speakers up into component by mounting tweeters only where the original door speakers were and then going with woofers in custom boxes under the front seats. You may not want to go to that much trouble but I just didn't want to change the looks of the doors at all.
In the back, there are actually a couple of trapezoidal shaped holes that are a throwback to the old 142s and 164s. They will accept 5x7s but HEY, who makes good 5x7s any more? You can squeeze in some 6x9s but you'll have to do some modifications with a sawzall and hacksaw blade if that's the kind of speaker you want. You should be something of a craftsman to make it all look good, too. I haven't installed any speakers on my current 240 but on a previous 240 I cut my own speaker boards from thin plywood and mounted seperate tweets and woofs. It worked very well.
I also put in Dynamat and WOW, what a difference that made. Dynamat will really make the interior of the 240 nice and quiet allowing your music to sound good without running the volumn so high. It's worth it.
