Default Installing a In-tank fuel pump

Hi guys,

I am thinking about taking my brand new In-tank fuel pump back out and reinstalling it incase i screwed something up or missed something. I have a 82 245 wagon , is there anything specific that i need to know about installing a fuel pump? It seems pretty straight forward. I have a haynes manual and follow the steps but i fear that my In-tank pump still isn't working. My main pump is extremely loud and has a constant intermittent buzz like its starving for fuel. Ive read alot of posts and most point to the "intank pump" . I have also jumped the relay and started the car but it sounds the same. I even swapped out the relay but its still there. I also replaced my fuel filter not to long ago. Basically my main pump died the other day altogether. So i went and got 2 from a junk yard ( i know i know), i cant afford a new one right now so that was my only option. The funny thing is before my main pump died a couple of days ago, it sounded perfect, no buzzing, no sound at all and my car performed better but then it died. I installed the pump i just got and the car started right up but like i said the pump is extremely loud and erratic and i can feel it when i drive, it hesitates a bit. I also disconnected the return line and tried to bleed the air out but that didnt work. I can say that there was alot of fuel going back to the tank so something has to be right.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

I'm going to recommend that you skip all this jacking around with the dual fuel pump system and switch to a Walbro intank pump and get rid of the main pump. I don't know why but even the new pumps on these old systems seem to break, and break often. I've been through 3 before I went and did the walbro pump. Since then, no problems. The pump model i used GSS341

I replaced the pre-pump/sender in my `93 245 a few years ago. The biggest problem I encountered was corrosion on top of the tank around the locking ring. I soaked it w/PBlaster and let it sit overnight...the next day the ring broke loose with a few hard whacks of a hammer on a brass chisel(brass won't make sparks...better safe than sorry when working around the fuel tank). I ended up replacing everything with new stuff from FCP...lock ring, seal, sender, pump, hose, and fuel sock.
