Default knocking/rattling sound

I'm sure this could be anything, but when I drive my '89 740 there's a loud rattling sound coming from the front passenger side. It sounds like a flat tire, but it isn't. The car still drives straight, but I feel as if the wheel is literally about to fall off. Could it be the shocks or something? There isn't anything lodged under the car or around the wheel either. Any suggestions will help - I want to try to fix it myself before going to the mechanic. Thanks.

It could be a bad balljoint or tie rod.
I would stop driving it and check everything ASAP.

Take the tire off and start pulling and pushing on things. Look for the play and mangled parts.
