Default Light problems

Hi all,

I just purchased a 1985 Volvo 240DL sedan for $450 with working AC and it's in great shape, I just had to replace the timing belt and drive it home, but I have a problem.

The brake lights and reverse lights don't work, I got the brake lights working for a short while yesterday then they went out again. It's not the bulbs or fuse and power appeared to be getting to the brake light wire and reverse light wire on the taillight connectors according to my test light. I'm thinking it's the circuit boards on the light assemblies... I cleaned the contacts and fiddled around and now the left dashboard turn signal indicator light comes on when I turn the headlights on as well... Can someone tell me what's going on here? I really want to drive my new(old) car and don't want to have to run a new wiring harness because tearing up carpets is pain in the butt!
