Default MAF Sensor Recommendations?

1988 245DL B230F Auto

After tearing apart and rebuilding both my fuel pump systems with new parts (a mechanic misdiagnosed bad fuel pumps as the problem) I finally figured out that my car wasn't staying started because of a bad MAF sensor. In the beginning someone in one of these forums told me to try it with the MAF disconnected. I thought they meant disconnect it from the air intake, and never disconnected the electrical connector. Big mistake which cost me two weeks and about $400 in dollars in parts, supplies, tools etc. Disconnecting the electrical connector to the MAF sensor finally solved the problem and now it stays running but I can only drive it slow without that sensor.

The aftermatket ones all appear to be the same. You can get it for $48 on ebay or $132 from Oreilly with a brand name on the box, but it looks like the same picture turned upside down. The question is, are they any good? Bosch doesn't make them anymore but IPD sells them remanufactured for about $1200. This is beyond my means unfortunately. And there aren't any at local junkyards right now unless they're on other cars I don't know about.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I would definitely avoid buying off of eBay. I typically use sites that specialize in Volvo parts like EEuroparts.com, FCPEuro.com or IPDUSA.com. Ever since Bosch stopped manufacturing the ones for these cars the aftermarket ones are very spotty in reliability. Even Volvo-branded ones can be junk out of the box now. I never used anything but Bosch and would buy them at junkyards whenever I would find them. They would charge me $35 and it was a crapshoot as to whether they were good or not but as you have seen it was worth the risk given the price of new or remanufactured Bosch ones.

This is one of the reasons I stopped buying these old Volvos. Some of the specialized parts are just getting too hard to find or are way overpriced.
