Manual 5-Speed: 5th gear button is loose!
So, I bought a 1990 240 "5" speed. The 5th gear is "over-drive". Now, when I bought the car, the guy that sold it to me told me that the 5th gear worked "mechanically" but that the button was not attached. He said they had re-attached it a few times, but that it just came loose again. So, after driving the car back and forth to work, mostly highway driving(25min one way), I finally tried to pull the cable out and re-attach it. The issue I ran into was that there is no cable in the shift-stick...
All this to say, I need some help. Has anybody encountered this problem? Might I somehow be missing the cable? How easy would it be to run a new cable up from the transmission?
Thanks, Gravy

Ah....You are in for a treat then. I had a wiring issue in my 86', and I ended up figuring out the whole wiring scheme, I'll try to explain it, and it is doable.
Two wires run down from the shift **** to the tranny. One wires in on top of the transmission to an actuator switch, while the other wire runs to the solenoid. These wires split up along the left side of the passengers area up to behind the glove box, where it gets plugged into a relay. The relay runs a few wires across the dashboard over to fuse box (7 I believe, double check though). Breaking off of this wire is a couple of wires that go to the overdrive indicator light on the display board (not necessary). There is also a clutch cable that goes off of this. Chances are, most the wiring is intact in your car and you'll only have to replace the wiring from the tranny to the ****. Pull out your glove box and look stick your hand in deep to the left and see if you can pull out a red relay. I have some pictures of the all the wiring and where it goes, and I just pulled the whole harness out of a car and I'll upload a picture of that later when I have more time. Hope this helps.
edit: The wires that go to the button are baby blue and maroon. I'll double check later which color goes to the actuator switch and which one goes to the solenoid.

Alright...I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more info or pics.
My actuator switch wire is cut really, really short so you can't really see it in the picture, it is just labeled with an arrow pointing to where it is sticking it's head out at.

here is one more pic of what the wires should look like coming up out of the shift ****. From here, the wires will hook into the plug that goes up to the relay, while the red and yellow wire will go from that plug to a hole in the floor under the shifter boot, which lead it to the solenoid and actuator switch.
Also, I would of gave you some better in-car photos if I could have, but the car is at the junk yard now :-/
