Is my fuel pump on the way out?
It's been whining for while, and my car's been getting harder and harder to start, and now after a bit of hard driving my engine's developed a misfire under load at low R.P.M.s. My particular model has only one fuel pump, outside the tank.
I've never replaced a fuel pump before, is it hard?

In my experience electric motor windings are like light bulbs, when they go, they go, sometimes with little warning. If the motor bearings are going they will make some noises first and that may in turn lead to failure. Either way they don't last forever.
an old fuel filter can also reduce performance.
I believe the '75 is the same up to 1993 which is the pump and filter is an assembly which I've done in half an hour. Actually it takes me longer to get the car jacked up than to get the pump out. Others say they can do it without jacking up the car but they are thin, young and agile.

I replaced the main fuel pump and filter on my 740. It took a long time because the fuel line banjo nuts were a bitch to take off and put on. I also ended up smelling like gasoline, which my wife and dog did not like.
