Failed heater core or associated hoses/connections. Not a job I would look forward to.

Heater controls set on 'recirculate'? Quickest way to completely obscure vision when the air is moist.

The problem could be that it is recirculating even if the recirculate button is not set. You can check this. Way in the back of the center console (up near the firewall), there is a door that is supposed to open when the recirculate button is pressed.

In order to check it, remove the center console side panel on the passenger side. Start the engine (the system runs on vacum). Peek behind the center console. Press/unpress the recirculate button. You should be able to see the door open (button pressed) and close (button unpressed).

If the door always stays open, then there is either a vacum leak or the actuator that opens/closes the door might be worn out.

I have had the same problem in my '91 240. Since the air conditioner no longer works, I just jammed a rag between the firewall and the door to keep it closed.

Hope this helps.
