Default New guy here, need advice

Hello all. I'll keep it brief. My dad has an 89 240gl, which he bought brand new in 88, and through the years it's had a lot of work done. Dad was in the middle of another turbo engine swap when he became ill and unfortunately passed away. I cannot and will not let this car go to waste, but it has taken me some time to really get into finishing the rebuild.
All of that being said, I leaving it automatic but going with another turbo motor. Not too familiar with Volvos, always been a VW guy, so there's going to be a learning curve. If you guys could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
What turbo engines/trannys are direct bolt-in's for a 240?
Can I use the 240 rear or do I need to upgrade to handle the boost?
Any reputable shops in the NY area?

Thanks for reading, all help appreciated

As swaps go, it's rather simple. A 93 or newer 940 motor is the best choice as they have bigger 13mm rods as well as piston oil squirters for cooling. You reuse the existing wire harness and it's plug and play. You really need to source the stronger AW71 automatic as the usual AW70 will not hold up. Mine lasted 2 or 3 weeks...Here's a link to my 89 245 that I turbo'd. https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...45-mods-40950/ More information can be found on turbobricks.com

No problem at all. As for rear ends, I'd pull the guts from a 92+ 940T...they had G80 limited slip rear ends, get the rear differential cover too. Stock Volvo rear ends are good to nearly 400 hp so you're ok there.

I'm thinking about trying to find a complete 93+ 940. I'll have everything in a nice neat package with parts to spare. What do you think?

Well, when I swapped in an SBF into my 90 740, I bought this ugly mud minnow for parts and was very glad I did...

Honestly, swapping in a turbo motor is relatively simple by comparison. The major mod to the motor is swapping intermediate shafts from your existing motor to the later turbo motor. You must convert the engine to a block mounted distributor for space constraints and most later turbo intermediates are not ground for a distributor drive. You have to swap the battery to the driver side, extend the AMM wiring to the passenger side, source or make some brackets for the intercooler and that's the lion's share.

Sounds fun. I'm going to spend winter sourcing parts, so by spring I should be ready to go
