Default Newbie to old volvos needs direction

Newbie here, please be patient. I bought 2 old volvos, a 1984 240 with 230,000 miles and a 940 turbo with 150,000 miles. I have no real problem with the 940 but I need some help with the old 240.
It had an intermittant stalling problem and now she will not start at all. I cannot hear the fuel pump running, but I am not sure that that is the trouble...I may not be chakcing it correctly. I have read a bit on wring problems with this car. There are several 'ends' to wires that look real bad. Could I cut them back and splice new ones in, or should I just spend the money to replace the harness? I see some slightly used harnesses on ebay for about $300, is this reasonable? Is it easy to change out for a wannabe mechanic? ALso some of them say that they are the 'updated' harnesses, is this important?
Also I read a little about troubleshooting the fuel pump... Can some one give me a starting place on what to check for first? Thank you very much.

Heres where to go for backround on Volvo problems and fixes. It's primarily for 700/900 series, but much pertains to the 240 as well...like the wiring harnesses.

Happy Reading!

Problem quickly isolated and repaired. There was a bad halo...-switch in the distributor. Replaced the switch, cranked right up and runs fine. Thank you for the help.
