Question Noise from Cylinder Head?

Hi all,
My '82 244's B21A engine seems to be making a small "knock" or "poof" (single and short) about every 30 seconds while in idle. The noise seems to come from the cylinder head or exhaust manifold (hard to pin point). I can feel it on the steering wheel as a small a knock, but there does not seem to be anything odd coming out of the exhaust (seems constant). Is this a misfire / timing issue? Any ideas?

Thanks!
Anthony

Could be a few things. When was the car tuned up last? I would think it is a misfire more then timing.

The carburettor was actually adjusted in the spring right before i noticed this problem. So maybe the car is running too rich or not rich enough? The plugs are a few years old (maybe only 2k on them - don't drive car much anymore). Wires are more than 5 years and so are the distributor points. Maybe indeed a good tuneup is in order since I don't drive much (nothing in the winter) and even though the miles are not adding up now, time is... Anything specific to look for?

I would give her a good tune up and have the carbs looked at again. The fact that the car is sitting all winter is not helping it.
