Default Noisy speedometer cable on 240

Our beloved 1983 240 is actually relatively low miles, at 230K. Odometer recently stopped working, and our Volvo-specialist mechanic fixed it. But since then, the speedometer cable is really noisy. We've taken it back twice to him, and it costs us every time, but he reassures us he put lube on the cable. It still is annoyingly noisy, very obviously the speedo cable, changes with speed of car.

I'm not much of a mechanic, but I will welcome hints. I've heard suggestions to loosen the cable where it connect to the speedometer, but it doesn't seem to budge when I do it by hand and I'm a bit worried I may do too much if I use a wrench.

I'd welcome advice!!

Are you sure it is the cable and not the speedometer itself. Since the speedometer was recently worked on I would suspect it.

Hmm....interesting idea. When my other old Volvo had a jumpy speedometer needle, it made a sort of similar noise. But this speedometer's needle seems to be showing the correct speed in a non-jumpy manner.
