objects in mirror may be FURTHER than they appear

I dont often drive my '89 740 but when I do I've noticed that there is an apparent big difference between the passenger side mirror and the rear view mirror.
Those cars that are traveling behind me on my passenger side appear to be much further away in the rear view mirror than they do in the passenger side mirror. So when I want to change lanes the side mirror will show cars at say 10 feet behind my rear end but the rear view will show the same car at say 15 feet behind me.
Anyone else experience this?
