Hey all

I erase the past codes on My 740 GLE it was 221,223,321 now it appears 311,321 the check engine light still on,the car has very low mpg and is very lazy is not running the way it should sometimes it accelerates fine sometimes not any help would appreciate it... thankx in advance

311 - No speedometer Signal
321 - Cold start valve signal missing or shorted to ground.

Have you replaced your instrument cluster lately with a different one? Has anything been done to the engine lately? A faulty cold start valvecan cause an excessive amount of fuel to be dumped in the engine if it's staying open all of the time. I'm just surprised that if that's the case that you don't have another code telling you the engine is running rich. Sure sounds like it is by your description though. Are you getting any black smoke out the tailpipe?

I'm trying to find and used instrument cluster so that's explained the code 311 because I don't have a Instrument panel right know put on on the car cause it has short circuit and nothingfunction onthe panel no gas, engine temp, speedometer on RPM. I inspect the car and there's no black smoke from the tail pipe as I said before the car when i hit a stop light it starts vibrating and the calms down for like 5 secs. Then sometimes it feels very very lazy sometimes it accelerates fine and it has very low MPG... So what do you think I have to do now???????

I think all of your problems are associated with your missing instrument cluster. Code 311 will cause all kinds of problems like you're describing along with charging problems, idle, etc. etc. I think if you hold off on replacing anything for now and just install a new/different cluster that most of your problems will go away. Be sure to clear the codes after you install the different cluster and then go from there.

 

I took out the cluster yesterday and it has the same problem it has now, the cluster worked it just stop moving the things that I said.So it can't be the cluster cause when i pulled the codes for the first time there was no 311 code, the problemthat the carhad is been like more than 5 months with the check engine light on and the cluster worked fine then I decided to pull the codes and get help here thanks for your answers jet tech

I still think the majority of your problems are with the cluster. That is the one "known" item that you need. If it was mine I would first replace the cluster with a known good one, see what codes you have, then go from there. The 311 code has been explained but you would be surprised how many functions are routed through the resistors in the cluster. Yes it could be a faulty cold start valve, but that cluster is responsible for a lot of running operations. It's just where I would start.

 

Igonna Start there then clusters that fits my car are the 89 and 90 740 models right...And What do you think os the 321 what should I do Because I can resolve the cluster problem very fast...?????????????

As far as what years were interchangeable on the 740's I don't know. And again I wouldn't touch a thing until your cluster is replaced and fully operational. If the 321 appears after you clear it then I would start looking at the cold start valve itself and the wiring going to it.

 

'89 and '90 instrument clusters are the same. However, there is a choice of VDO or Yazaki.

I replace the cluster with a used one and its working as it should. I erased the codes and as soon as i drive the car the check engine light appear showing the same code 321 as I said before I noticed the car sometimes feels very lazy and has low MPG spending so much gas, theres no black smoke from the pipe, I noticed the car has no catalyst I think the other owner get it out and here in Puerto Rico To get the inpection pass you pay a little more for them to pass you the car and that's what I did last october but I don't know is there are a relation of the problem that I have. Any hints on what should I do know
