Oil all over engine 240
I was a quart low so I added the needed quart. Then soon after I began to smell burnt oil. So I pulled over and lifted the hood to find oil all over the engine. (I did not spill even a drop when I put the oil in) I bought some degreaser and cleand the engine off the next morning. Trying to find the location of the leak, I drove it around tell I smelled the burnt oil smell. I lifted the hood to see what looked to me like the oil is coming from the filler cap. What would make the oil come out of the filler like this?
85 240
245 thousand miles, valve job done @ 195 thousand
I have never overheated it

It could be as simple as replacing the rubber seal on the oil filler cap. Or you could have excess crankcase oil pressure caused by a clogged PCV system. When is the last time the flame trap was cleaned out?
Sorry for getting back a bit slow. I took the 240 to my Volvo Mech. He saw the oil on the engineand pulled the rubber tubes and the flame trap first thing. He blew air through itand found itto be clear. Hehas some bigger jobs now and did not have much time.I am to bring it back this Fri. for a compresion test. He says it could be new engine time.
Hmm, $6 rubber seal on oil cap or a new engine, decisions decisions.
Let the engine idle, loosen the oil cap and set it on top,
if it blows off, the breather system is clogged,
if it sits there and rattles the breather system is good.
