Default Pre-'86 European headlights on a 240

People have asked about post-'86 240s, but having scrolled through 14 pages of search results, I haven't found an answer to this.

I have a US-market '84 240 with four rectangular sealed beams. I would like to use European headlights. I found a good writeup that showed what the European options at the time were. I am particularly interested in these.

The 260 uses the same hood and grill as my machine and those two lamp assemblies look very similar.

The question: Are the large rectangular lamp assemblies on the flat-hood European 240 the same as on the 260?

And can they be mounted on a US-spec car without altering the sheet metal? I may have access to a German junkyard soon and want to make the most of it!

afaik, 260's are all long noses, rather than flathoods, and I don't think the lights or grills are interchangable between the two without it looking funky.

if you have a flathood, you can use euro flathood parts, although you might need the grill in addition to the lights, I can't vouch for that.

wait, ok, you have a long hood, afaik, you ahve to use long nose grills and lights. in addition to the 260, diesel 240's were, I believe, also long hood.

Thanks for the reply! You are always on top of my questions.

I have the long hood which necessitates a long hood grill, as the flat hood necessitates a flat hood grill. The headlights themselves on both look very similar and it wouldn't make a ton of sense to develop an entirely new lamp assembly just for the 260 and Diesel.

Does anyone have part numbers for the two headlights pictured? Or an exploded view of those two noses? That should solve it.

i'm heading out shortly, but if I remember, I'll set my VADIS for Euro, and see if I can't dig up some PN's for the eurostuff

I'm pretty sure the flatnose cars have a wider grill and smaller headlights than the longnose cars.

This is really helpful!

The other question is whether the US long hood has any different sheet metal than the long hoods in the rest of the world.

I just found a Swiss listing for a gas 240 with a long hood, so there may be more to pick from than I thought. Then again, the description says it has a flat nose.

oh, there's lots more than that, see this page for some ideas.

200 Front End Options | K-Jet.org

I like the one made from e-code 740/940 lights, and a custom grill made from various grill bits

there's two styles of long hoods, early and late, and more combinations on that k-jet page than I wanna enumerate. :0

my wide grill comment was with respect to the very early [75-77?] 240's

Unless you are specifically interested in the look of the large single lamp euro lights, you have another, and simpler option for getting the euro spec light pattern.

You can get replacement "sealed beam" lights from Hella that use a separate replaceable bulb in a housing like later model headlamps. Other than a short adaptor pigtail they are a drop in fit. It made a huge difference in the quality of light on my car.

That's my fallback plan. I would prefer the larger lamps with city lights, but if the German junkyard opportunity falls through, I will just buy the four modern 4"x6" lamps.
