pre ignition/knocking for 79 244
hey all
i just aquired a 79 244dl, the original motor has been changed to a gas straight 4 cylinder engine, that has been modified from FI to use a carb. i have a couple of questions regarding the car in general.
1. what grade gas works best? i've been using the cheaper stuff but i've noticed it pings alot, and it'll chug for a couple of seconds after the car has been turned off
2.if the motor is full of carbon, what would be the best way of removing it?(i've tried lucas fuel treatment, and MMO, as well, i drove for about 30min at 130kph(80mph)
3.also are there any common problems or issues with this make/model? i've allready had to mess with a lot of the plastic fuses, cause they weren't connecting properly
4. does the DL mean that car was origianl diesal?
thanks alot for the help

RE: pre ignition/knocking for 79 244
DL stands for deluxe, more or less, and was the bottom line car. Some of the motors from those years were made to run on premium, with compression ratios around 10.5 to 1. If she's full of carbon, try a full strength fuel cleaner like Chevron Techron . If that does not do it, then others have used various potions and methods ( like water injection), but I think it is best to just go ahead and pull the head to do a proper job. Make sure the fuses are the copper/bronze type and not the cheap pot metal/aluminum crappy ones they sell at most auto stores. The cheap ones will corrode, and cause problems. The good ones can be pulled from junkers, and ordered from FCP Groton.
