Rebuilding 1992 NA B230F RedBlock
Hi All,
So I posted a while back about my 92 NA 240 that was ran without oil and the engine seized up. I got the engine unseized and immediately after there was a knock on decerlation and in some cases at idle. NOT while on accleration though. At this point I figured I would just drive it until it was done. The day it stopped running I assumed the worst but I believe now what actually caused the stopping of the engine was a bad alternator. Anyway, I bought another 244 immediately after and its been in the yard for about a year. NEXT, I was told if a rod blew that it would be cinematically poking through the block somewhere, etc. I examined my block and see nothing of the sort. I am beginning to believe what the block acquired was a piston slap. Anyway, I am now in the beginning stages of building a turbo brick and just my luck there are no redblocks in the nearest junkyards. So while I have this block sitting in my yard of course it could probably live being used but I am not really feeling having a noisy block. So can I rebuild this? I can't find anything online about someone rebuilding these. Is there a reason for this? Thanks |
Rebuilding an engine is a major undertaking. My advice is, if you are looking for instructions, DON'T! It will cost a fortune and the result will be underwhelming (I am being kind)... You can buy a b230 for a couple of hundred in most markets--that's the way to go!

I really don't need an entire engine. Just a block. I have everything else. The block is really the foundation and I can't start my project until I have one. I have checked local JY's and there are no 2/7/900's. I have checked ebay and craigslist but im not trying to buy a whole car either. Some are for sale for 700-1000 bucks but I just don't need all of that. Any other ideas of where I could locate a redblock?

um, if your engine siezed up, odds are the crankshaft bearing surfaces are scored, the rods and pistons damaged, the head, everything.

Nobody will sell you "just a block". And even if you did find a block somewhere, how would you know if the block is OK? It means that someone has a block from a good engine they stripped--that's a lot of work! You are better off buying an entire motor. If you insist on true rebuilding, you will be shocked at the a la cart prices of things like pistons, rings, rods, etc. That is, if you can even find them.

I would like to think the head is still OK. That's really what I need off the car. The block I could care less about. I just got the head machined also when I replaced the head gasket. It cleaned up real nice. The car still ran like a boss after the seizing. When I take head off will there be any noticeable damages? Busted valves, any discolorations, etc?

You might beable to find just a block from an engine builder. Or just take in your block and have it bored and honed.
