Default Replaced OD Solenoid Bypass - Still Faulty!

Hey everyone,

I've made a few threads regarding this issue and I apologize for doing so but to recap:

-I own a 1992 940 GL non-turbo
-My overdrive has stopped working completely so I bought the OD solenoid bypass plate found here. Although it claims to be only for 240 or 700's I got to that page through their 940 section.
-I was able to install the plate drove to the highway, sped up to 50MPH and..... the OD did not engage.

Does this plate not fit the vehicle? The transmission ID plate is gone (sketchy I know) so I can't positively ID the tranny. I installed the plate with the rubber gasket facing downwards and furthermore I removed the relay and was unable to remove the old solenoid from the vehicle so I zipped it with some zip-ties. Do I have to completely remove it from the vehicle and if so, how is that done? It's worth noting (maybe?) that the OD light has never worked on the dash so I don't know if my tranny is Fed or what the hell is going on. You guys have been great so far and your help is needed! If any other information is required please ask. Thanks!

One thing I'm wondering about is if its possible to install that plate backwards. I would ask IPD if they think thats possible. For OD to work the fluid has to pass between the center hole to another hole towards the front of the car, and the channel in the plate has to match up with these. See:
http://cleanflametrap.com/pub_autoOD...autoOD220.html

I have also heard that the holes in the transmission can become blocked with "stuff" and people have to stick wire down them to clear the obstruction.

I would:
1. make sure the area is clean and remove the plate
2. clean out the tranny holes with a piece of wire
3. run the car for one second and catch the fluid .. this will hopefully eject what shouldn't be in there.
4. re-install the plate making sure the channel matches up with the holes.
5. flush the transmission fluid using this method:

6. check the fluid level during idle after shifting through every gear twice.

Bubba,

As for installing the plate on backwards, I don't believe I could have done that as the plate is not equal on all sides. However, one side has a rubber O-ring and the other does not. Like I said before I installed with the O-Ring facing downwards. I will stick a paperclip into the holes and see if anything breaks apart. I'll keep you update with pictures of what's going on. Thanks.

when you pulled the old solinoid out did it come with both O-rings. There is a smaller one that if left behind on the transmission will cause the passage to be blocked on the bypass...

That is a fantastic question. I didn't have a mirror available so it could certainly be on there. Speaking of which, when I was sitting the plate on it did see to 'float' above the tranny ever so much. I figured it was just the O-ring on the plate. I'll check and let you know. Thanks!

OK, problem solved. I removed both O-rings and now I can safely drive on the highway again. Thank you both bubba240 and regime for helping to take a huge load off my back.
