Default Scored a Volvo 240 DL 1987

Yup. I have been having my eye on a old 240 that I had seen just sitting in a yard for about a year and a half, very nice condition, medium blue with dark blue interior. Excellent condition on the outside. Finally found the owner and was able to buy it. Has the manual 5 speed. Car needed a battery and she started right up. Interior is excellent still has the original floor mats! no tears or stains on the seats. Trunk still has the carpet, and one of those fake spares, is that correct?? my '92 volvo 240 has a real spare not one of those 50 mph max cheap mickey mouse spares. Will a full size spare fit in this car?
Of course the speedometer works, but the odometer has died. Is the IPD odometer a good fix at $19.95? Thanks, and God bless.
Mike

All my 240s ('89 245, '90 244, '91 244) have the small spare. Came from the factory that way.

Default scored a nice 240

Hmmm....my 1992 240 has a full size spare, and the cover and jack assy doesn't look like it has ever been out of the car.
Thanks, mike

The IPD odometer gear is one of the tougher ones out there, I'd fix it and throw in a tachometer if there isn't one in there.

My '92 Sedan had a goofy compact spare, my '90 wagon had a compact, and so does my '91 740. You can switch them out with a full-size no problem, but it might break the little belt on 240 wagons.

a tach isn't really that useful on an automatic transmission car.

True, but the OPs car is a 5-speed manual, I dunno if those had tachs out of the box or just those "shift lights". I just shifted by speed and sound whenever I had a stick.

The car has a small 52 mm tach in it and it works great! would love to put on in my '92 any idea where I can get one?

Thanks, and God bless.

the factory tach on a late model 240 replaced the large clock in the main cluster, and they put a small (52mm?) clock in the center console instead.

My '85 sedan has a full size spare. I would guess it was an option when the cars were new, or maybe the GL came with them and the DL got the donut spare?

Dave Barton sells a repair kit for the odometer and includes instructions on the website. I got the kit but haven't found the time to repair mine yet. He's got some other useful 240 stuff.

I think our 87 came with a mini, but when we dinged a alloy rim when nearly new and got a replacement, the dinged rim became the spare. every 10 years or so we've put the better of the old tires coming off onto the spare so it doesn't dry rot away.
