Default Shifter light bulb change

The bulb has gone out in the shifter consol (Auto) , How do you change it?

Remove the ashtray and centre console panel in front of the selector.

Remove two screws securing the left hand half of the selector cover - one at each end of the brush.

Lift off that half cover.

The bulb and holder can now be pulled out.

I have the '90 740 GLE. I was able to replace it by removing the fuse cover, popping the center consol clip under the fuse cover, removing the two screws in the center consol an removing the center consol. Once it was out of the way I had to unscrew the shifter cover and the bulb was on the underside of it. Works like a champ now!

hey zon.... thanks for the advice... i removed the ashtray/fusebox/storage box and the two phillips screws at the bottom of the center console near the parking brake. However, I'm a little uncertain on how to get the automatic shifter cover off. and also, do i need to remove the hard to reach torx screws on the metal brace near the fusebox?

There are just 1 or 2 screws holding on the cover, cant remember for some reason. But anyhow it was pretty obvious which screw(s) held it on. The screw(s) were right next to the P R N D 2 1 display.
