Default How to Replace Shifter Rod Bushings ? Shifter Lever Play or Loose

Can someone tell me if these bushings (Shifter Rod Bushings)

are installed from the interior of the car, (something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkIfz...eature=related)

As opposed to install from inside like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Tqokqzdox4

or an installation from underneath the car?

videos are 30 seconds long and convey the idea quickly. i'm used to the latter method where you drop the bushing at the 'top' of the transmission.

I don't what kind of a car we're talking about, or tranny. On my '86 240 with automatic I replaced two small white nylon bushings from underneath the car. Lots of fun. I trimmed a little of the flange off one side and greased it up so it would go in easier. Anyway it fixed the wobble in the shift lever. It helps to have the front end up on jackstands, lie down on a roll-around, and have a good light.

You can only do the Volvo from underneath.

Didn't get very far. One of the bolts is rusted in place and I don't have a torch or a drill. It seems all those pieces need replacing. (The front of the car is ---->>> this way).

As tedv suggests, to be done from underneath. There is a lock screw at the base of the shift lever assembly which can be removed from underneath the car, so even if I'd gotten those screws out, I probably wouldn't have been able to replace the bushings anyway. To be continued.
