Spare Tire / Trunk Question

3 Attachment(s)
Just inheritted a 88' Volvo 240GL this last week. I had a question regarding the trunk area. It just seems like the spare tire is sitting back there unsupported, and the carpet piece is just draped over the tire. Is this normal? Or am i missing some hardware or Velcro or something. See pictures below.

Thanks in advance.

i believe there is a strap with a clamp that secures the tire in place...

Yup...early models had a rubber strap and clamp while later ones had a nylon web strap w/ hooks. The strap feeds through the hole on the top of the tire cover.

I just picked up a 240 as well (88). Noticed that in the bottom of the spare tire well, there was an open hole about the size of a quarter. Is it supposed to be open like that? I would think not, so what do I fill it with?

it is supposed to have a rubber plug in there...

It's a drain, actually. The rubber plug insert has a small opening facing the rear to allow any leaking water to exit. In this pic, you can see I have a hose coming out of the plug at the bottom of the "butt cheek".

I figured a drain of some sort should be there. Where the best place to find a replacement? FCP? Local yard? Or should I just stick a cork in it.

Thanks all for the quick replies. I dont have a strap but that would explain the cut out in the tire carpet cover. I will try to locate one. Does the jack and iron just rest behind or is there hardwear for those as well?

Volvo may actually still stock them, worth a shot. Otherwise, get a solid grommet and put a hole in the middle of it.

Well, the tool kit in later years was stowed within the little pouch on the tire cover. As for the jack and handle, they migrated over the years. I guess you don't have the manual? Some years had the jack standing up on the back edge of the wheel well.

I found the strap in the floating around in the back of the trunk. Can anyone snap a photo of their spare tire and trunk setup? I can seem to find an acceptable placement for all of the items such as the leather tool bag, jack stand, and the iron.

Thanks in advance.

You defiantly want the strap to hold the tire in place. I had my tire put pressure against the tail light and burn the circuit board and melt a portion of the tail light housing itself.

Where do I hook the straps in ? Can’t seem to figure it out

this is a 8 year old thread....

what year/model vehicle do you have? please fill in your profile.

IIRC, on our 240 sedan, the strap went top to bottom, there's a flat tab with a slot above the tire, and another one below it that the strap clips into, while going through the hole in the carpet cover. the jack is stowed inside the spare, and held in place with the strap, the tool wrap is stored in the pocket in the carpet cover.

my 740 and 940 were wagons, the spare was under the floor.

I can confirm that one must be very careful with the spare tire placement. I too messed up my driver side tail light by allowing the spare to float around
unsecured. Aside from all the rattling noise created by all the loose parts, it will ruin the tail light and associated wiring such as grounding and power to all
the various light bulbs. It was very aggravating to the point where I could not understand and correctly repair it. I ended up having an vehicle electrical technician
diagnose and repair as needed, The connection harness was the culprit as the copper connectors were badly corroded, mostly from the poor connections. Had to replace
the harness wit a good used one from a great Volvo site called VOLUPARTS in Georgia. Check them out for all your Volvo need, old to new!
