Strange Alternator Issues
Here's what is happening...It began when my SRS light came on, fuel gauge lost power and radio went off. I took off the alternator and had it tested, it failed so I bought a new one. After installing the new alternator the bat light came on with the key off. The car started and all lights were off on dashboard. After driving a few miles the SRS light came on, fuel gauge went dead and radio died. Anyone have any idea what is the problem?

I had a problem like this in an 86 240 several years ago. Replacing the alternator ultimately solved it, but I went through one bad rebuilt one before getting a good one.
Another possibility is a cruded up ignition switch. My 90 240 does this occasionally, and jiggling the key makes it quit. Treatment with graphite stops it for a while.

Your problem is in the gauge cluster.... you see, the battery light turning on excites the alternator, if the battery and, ultimately the other lights, don't come on, you won't charge.
Try tapping lightly at the cluster near the top of the speedo....if that causes the lights to come on, you will have to have your cluster repaired, repair it yourself or buy a refurbished/used cluster....
other thing you could do, just buy a push "on" momentary switch from the local parts joint and run a wire to battery + and the other to the post where the small red lead connects on the alt, just give it a quick push after your car is started and you'll be charging....
Hope this helps....
