temp gauge repair question

Hello all,

I'm getting ready to try to diagnose the problem with the temp gauge on my '90 245. I know that the standard test for the gauge is to unplug the wire from the sensor, ground it, and see if the gauge goes all the way up. However, if the compensator is faulty, will this test still work?

If that test will not work, should my next move be to bypass the compensator with a jumper?

thanks,

monty

RE: temp gauge repair question

Hi Monty,

If you remove the wire going to the sensor, have someone in the car watch the gauge while you tap it on the block. Don't hold it there just tap it, the gauge should jump up. My original temp. comp. board didn't work but I was able to get one from another cluster that works fine. It might be cheaper to buy a whole cluster off ebay with a known working temp. gauge then buy a new board. At least that's what I ended up doing. Just a thought.....

RE: temp gauge repair question

I would start with the jumper. 95% of the cars out there are already jumped.
Big common problem with them.
