Default Is there any reason I should keep my 92 940??

Well I have a 1992 940 Gl Volvo and it has 177,40 on it and it runs really good.Only thing is last 2 years car did need repairs Brakes,Roters,Struts, and last week I put out $300.00 because the car wasn't starting sometimes and it was the aftermarket security system shorting out the electrical system and it took them days to find the issue.I know volvos can run after 200,00 miles but is it worth it to keep a car with the age it has and the high miles?? Aren't other parts going to keep breaking because of age?? Any thoughts.

our 1987 240 has about 400k miles on the original engine (we're the original owners). the body is still in good condition, the engine was running fine, but it has some rusted exhaust studs so its starting to get noisy from exhaust leaks. last year, for the first time, the cam shaft seals were replaced. mostly its just had routine maintenance, brakes, timing belts. I think its worn out 2 alternators but the 3rd one has plenty of life left. the AC hasn't worked since forever. when the radiator started to leak 4-5 years ago, I got a all brass one from IPD. at about 250k miles, we replaced a lot of bushings in the rear end as the car was getting creeky, and it has overload springs, which make it great for towing a small boat or whatever. I had the automatic transmission rebuilt at about 300k miles as it was starting to slip. new IPD seat covers considerably spiffed up the interior. I recently replaced the steering inner tie rods as the steering was getting really sloppy, this tightened it back up like new. it probably needs another set of shocks, but its not that bad really (I think we replaced them exactly once, using volvo branded boge shocks).

the 240 is a very easy car to work on. there's really only a few quirks mechanically, easily dealt with, and they will run a half million miles or more with reasonable service.

<edit> oops, you said 940. a 940 is a nicer newer 240 same engine, same transmission, same differential, but the 940 has a nicer interior, chassis, and suspension. its quieter and smoother riding..

re: 940's, I bought a 1992 740 turbo wagon (which was in every way a stripped down model 940 with the old style seats) with almost 200k miles last year to fix up to be my daily driver for the next 10 years or so. nuff said ?

I just rewarded myself with a stereo upgrade... replaced the front 3" dash speakers with JL Audio C2-600 component speakers, 6" woofer in the doors and 1" tweeter hidden in the factory speaker panel mount.

Spyglass, remember that even with a new car or newer car you are still going to have maintenance expenses even if nothing breaks down. No matter how new the car is you are always going to have to change the oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brakes, rotors, tires, filters, and sparkplugs. Even if you have more expensive things go wrong remember that with an old car you do not have monthly car payments that can cost you $300+ a month easily.

brakes are consumables, like tires.
