Turning the boost up?
hey guys, new to volvo's... i have an 85 740 turbo plus+++... hehehe... i've been hearing rumours of a manual boost controller installed from the factory in this "plus" package.. if this is true how shall i turn it up..
You got really lucky that system is very Rare and is a factory setup.
The boost is already turned up.
I wouldn't turn it up anymore unless you first install an aftermarket boost guage.

yah i know its very rare.... i'm happy to have it... i'll probably get a boost gauge, safc, and a wideband.. then i can safely tune it up to around 12-14 psi.. how much can the stock internals handle? and i also want to lower it.. sits way to high.
i'll post pics soon.. i don't want to until i get a new taillight and front corner light.. both are smashed.. haha.. and no i didn't do it.. it came like that.. but other than that the car is mint.. i just lowered it about and inch... with some universal coil spring clamps.. but it doesn't look very noticeable.. i'm going to have to get creative if i want it lower..

Before you wind up the boost, you should do a few things. A thorough tune up is essential, making sure your cooling system is good is also essential. Check and verify fuel pressure.
You WILL need chips if you want to spend much time over 12 psi, the factory maps default around there and go pig rich and retard timing like crazy.
You should also do an exhaust system, you will gain a free 2psi of boost just with a free flowing 2.5-3" cat back system.
These engines will live forever at 15-16 psi, 22psi is not uncommon. Transmissions become a weak link at these boost levels though and the stock turbos are way out of their efficiency range at 22 psi, so either factor in a bigger turbo, or set it all up for 14-16 psi and enjoy gobs of midrange torque. These engines do not need to rev out to make good horsepower.
My car is a solid low 14 second car with Fred's chips, 14psi bost and an exhaust. Everything else is bone stock.
Running a car with decent boost is a bit of a commitment though. You MUST run the best fuel all teh time, be religions about tune ups and maintenance and be super paranoid about fuel pressure. As an example, I replaced my in tank pump just because I didn't like the sound it was making. .
