Default US model 740/940 turbo boost

are the US model 740/940 turbos (mine is a 92) the LPT or HPT variety referenced in european docs?

I'm toying with adding a boost controller as my wagon is tight and runs very well. I know I'll be encouraging things to break faster, ah well. I've done /some/ random reading on this and think I have the general idea...

couple questions tho...

1) as a Californian, my car is subject to biannual smog inspections. will I have to remove the boost controller to pass smog, or will they likely overlook it if I use black hose and keep it discrete?

2) I don't particularly want to clutter my dash with an aftermarket boost gauge, any reason I shouldn't attempt to calibrate the stock gauge with my mityvac and put a couple tick marks on it at like 10psi, 12psi ? I figure I'll not go much above 10psi
