Default Volvo 240 1983 Wagon Engine Noise Loud

Hi there,

Although I don’t notice any particular noise that makes me believe there is an engine issue, the engine just seems to run loud in general.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to reduce engine noise?

Thank you

Check the door and window seals. Ensure all vents are closing completely. Can you describe the sound like a rushing fan sound or a rumble possible exhaust sound? Do you only notice the noise in the car or standing outside also. Is the sound louder in front of the car or at the rear?
It is possible some part of the exhaust system is touching the body so as to transmit more sound into the car.

Check your engine mounts. If one has collapsed it will transfer engine vibration to the chassis of the car making noise. Also check to ensure the exhaust system has all of the rubber hangers holding it in place and does not vibrate against the body.

Thank you for your reply!

The loudest noise is a low rumbling when I accelerate in 3rd and 4th gears. It may be the engine mounts (which I replaced a few years ago), the exhaust system or this hole where the stick shift, which basically exposes the cabin to the outside air below (I’m going to put sound dampening rubber on there later this week). I just noticed this hole after looking underneath the rubber covering around the bottom of the stick shift.

Thank you for your reply. I had the mounts replaced a few years ago. Do you think they could be bad already? Thanks

Noises during acceleration can likely be ignition timing, exhaust system vibration, or U joints. Engine torque is different in different gears.
