Default want new speedometer to have miles of old

I have an 86 240 with a broken speedometer with 76k miles on it. That is close to the true miles of this car.

What I would like to do is buy a junkyard speedo and change the miles to that of my old one, 76k. Can that be done?

short answer yes.

I'm not really sure the best way to do it, but you could definitely pull the junked speedo and then use a drill to turn the gears in the odometer till you have the right mileage again. Or just find another odometer that has 76K.

Hmm...the 86 has an electronic speedo so the drill's a no-go. Setting the mileage on the 240's is child's play. Basically, one pulls the speedo from the cluster and opens it up as if one were replacing the odometer gear (google the procedure). The odometer shaft that the numbers roll on is easily manipulated to whatever mileage you want. I'm currently rebuilding a GT. When it gets ready for the speedo to go in, it will read zero.
