Your dad is wise. If you are replacing the factory radio then the car should still have its factory wire harness. Several companies make wiring adapters so you don't necessarily have to splice the factory wiring. You would only need to splice the adapter (clearly labeled) to the new radio wiring (also labeled) then plug the adapter into the factory harness.
If the wiring on your car has already been hacked up, you have a mess on your hands. But there is a thread named 'radio wiring' that has the factory color coding for all the wires.

Make sure you get your speakers wired correctly. If not, you can blow them AND your head unit. If you can't figure out which wire is positive or negative, simply hook your speaker's wires to a nine volt battery, MOMENTARILY. When you have the positve from the battery connected to the positive on the speaker and the negative likewise, the speaker will push outward. If you have them backward the speaker will pull inward. I learned this back in the day when I was a roadie.
