Default wierd temperature related problem

I have a 90 240DL with a ton of kilometers on it. The car has been superb since I bought it. Absolutely no major problems until this winter. The car will not start unless its plugged in. Any temperature below minus 10 deg. C, it will just crank and crank with no fire. you can smell gas, but no ignition. I did some troubleshooting, ie checking all sensors, especially measuring temp sensor in the head, seems ok. HELP!
