170 miles on 18.5 gallons.. normal?
Hey Dan, most of those post are really old. I posted to an older post so I would not start a new one.
I'm going to start with a new air filter (likely a K&N) and some new plugs. I'm not getting any codes so I'm not about to start getting to agressive. Not sure when the last SET OF PLUGS were installed.
I had a new set of Michelin® Energy™ MXV4® Plus installed yesterday. They are suppose to help with gas milage, ride smoother, and be quiet. They are also rated H which I hear is about 136 MPH. Don't think the car will ever see that speed, not with me driving it (maybe my wife).
I'll post back after I double check milage now, then again after I do plugs & air filter. The ScanGuage is telling me I'm getting 12 mpg.

Well, I filled up yesterday morning and drove about 100 miles. Then I drove about 70 miles today, I still have more than 1/2 tank of gas on my gauge. I guess this ScanGauge II thing is really off because it appears that I'm getting about 22 mpg and this thing is claiming I'm only getting 12 mpg. It also says I have about 7 gallons left but I have about 12 according to my gas gauge.
I'll post back soon. So far I really like these Michelins. A lot smoother ride than the tires that were on there.

Well, I drove about 375 miles and still have 4 gallons left. I'm getting 22 mpg. Not sure if I want to tune the car up and mess up a good thing. LOL. I'll have to get ScanGuage on the phone to see why this thing is so off.
I'm running another tank full in the "Sport" mode. Pick up is a lot better, seems like I'm getting around 20.5 but I'll see.

In S mode I'm getting about 22 mpg. I called ScanGauge and they told me to give the computer a few tank fill ups to learn my car and they were right. Now it shows the correct gas milage.
In sport mode I'm getting 22 mpg, in econo I'm getting 23 mpg. I guess I'll keep it in sport mode. I like the full power available when I want it, not worth the 1 mpg in econo to me. I am good with hypermilling anyway so the econo mode probably doesn't help me much. I think it works good for people with heavy feet. When I drive agressive I get a little more than 20 mpg but I'm really not an agressive driver.

I bought my 97 960 on EBay 10 months ago. Being a first time Volvo owner, I didn't know how much mileage I would get. I have gotten 20-22 mpg consistently. Mostly country roads with some city driving. The manual calls for premium fuel, and I try to use it most of the time, although it costs about $2.00 more per fill up. I have not tried driving in the Sport mode. I really like the car.
Have a wonderful day

Yesterday I drove almost 80 miles, mostly highway and got almost 30 mpg. I think that is amazing for a 13 year old car that probably has never had a tune up. I got it with 53k and now it has 87k. I plan to tune it up soon, just have not gotten around to it yet and it runs & drives great.
Update on gas milage. Well, I tuned the car up in March. That consisted of changing the spark plugs and air filter. Didn't see a big milage change. I also tracked down my P0330 code, misfire on #3 that would happen every once in a while. Mainly while sitting at a drive through. Had a loose wire inside of the coil connector.
I drove about 1,000 miles on the highway a couple of days ago. The ScanGuage has been giving me heck. When I calibrate it, it starts telling me that I'm gettng about 654 mpg. It's been doing that for several months. I'm going to reset it to default once more and not calibrate it. Maybe it will work right then. Anyway, when I drive around 75 mph, I'm getting 22 mpg. So I was trying to find the sweet spot and it seems to be about 64 mph. There I'm getting 27.1 mpg and drove about 465 miles and still had 4 gallons left. I guess I can go about 550 miles before having to get gas (would have a 1/2 gallon left). That means I can drive from Oklahoma City to Albuquerque on 1 tank of gas, as long as I drive around 64 mph. That is awsome to me. I checked my tire pressure and it was 31 psi. I'm going to pump it up to 35 psi and see what happens.

I've never bought an older car that didn't need a new O2 sensor, and they've ALWAYS responded well to having a new sensor installed. Much better fuel economy and better part throttle running are just a couple of the gains.
O2 sensors are a consumable item, they're way below spec by 60-80k kms (50k miles).
I also always replace air filters yearly or after big dust storms. Paper element filters are so cheap, and their bad effect on fuel economy so great, that you can't afford NOT to replace them!
Regards, Andrew.

I did it. I drove from Albuquerque NM to Oklahoma City OK on 1 tank of gas. It was about 545 miles and I had a couple of gallons left. I'm pretty surprised. I am getting about 27.3 MPG steady, at 63 mph. Even with the tires inflated to 35 PSI. Ride was a little harder but didn't get any better gas milage.
